Get Your Desktop Ready

No, not your computer, literally the top of your desk! Here are 4 useful things to keep nearby as points of reference. You could laminate them and stick them on to the surface of your desk, put them on a noticeboard near you or put them in a file of "go to" resources that you keep near your desk.


This post was inspired by some freebies in Ms Forde's Classroom's TPT store so I'll start with those!

...And as we're on the topic of desk space, I highly encourage you to go and get a unit with 5 drawers and label them Monday through Friday. I did this for the first time last year and it has made such a difference to the tidiness of my desk! 

Rugby World Cup Resources As Gaeilge

As you know, the Rugby World Cup is taking place next month. I created teaching resources in English. Now, an Irish version is available in my TPT store. It's just $3 (not even €3!). This could be very useful for teachers in gaelscoileanna or if you choose to do "caitheamh aimsire" as your téama in September or October. If you're not too confident on the rugby terminology as Gaeilge, is féidir foclóir a bhaineann le rugbaí le feiceáil ar an suíomh TG4.

Prepare Your Classroom for the Price of a Pint: GAEILGE EDITION

Welcome to the first edition of "Prepare Your Classroom for the Price of a Pint." Today's Gaeilge edition totals to about €6.43 (which is closer to the price of a pint in Temple Bar or a long drink/cocktail elsewhere). I couldn't resist sacrificing the alliteration though! 

Anyway, think of how easily you could spend €7 on something you don't need. Here are some other ways you could spend it more selflessly. There are also loads of FREEBIE suggestions down at the bottom of the post so if you don't want to spend money on your classroom, skip down there!

These foghraíocht posters from Seomra Ranga are absolutely brilliant for remembering how to pronounce different letter combinations as Gaeilge. There are lots of different versions up there. They were very helpful when I was teaching 5th class.

One to follow: Réalta Ranga

Hi all,

I had to share this blog with you. Réalta Ranga is a brand new source of teaching resources and ideas from a teacher in a gaelscoil. This teacher has experience with both the upper end of primary school as well as the infants. Posts are written as Gaeilge and in English so it's great for those of you who want to do some light reading to keep up your scileanna as Gaeilge. They (sorry, I don't know your name!) also have a TPT store, Facebook page and a Pinterest profile for you to check out.

This new blog has gotten off to a very promising start!

An aimsir resources

Just a short post today!

I have also uploaded resources for creating a map for the children to present their own réamhaisnéis na haimsire. It'll also work as a nice display when you're covering the theme. I drew a large map of Ireland onto green paper and stuck on the noticeboard with the treoracha flashcards. I then cut out and laminated the symbols and asked the children to present the weather forecast. Click here to download it.

One to follow: Seomra Ranga

Words cannot express how much I love SeomraRanga.com. It's full of fantastic resources, ready-made for teachers. My classroom walls are filled with Seomra Ranga posters and flashcards and I have gotten some great lesson ideas and links to other teaching resources. All resources are free to download but you can make a donation if you wish. 


Although, I think I've yet to meet a teacher who doesn't know about Seomra Ranga, perhaps there are some out here in the blogosphere. If you have never been, go there at once! I can guarantee that you will find some terrific resources/ideas.

Schools in the past

My class have been studying the history of schools in Ireland recently. If you are near Dublin, it may be worth bringing your class to the Small Lives photographic exhibition at the National Library's Photographic Archive in Temple Bar. It's running until June 2012. If not, you can view photographs from it on their Flickr site.

The NLI have provided some lesson ideas based on photographs of a classroom in Waterford. Click here to download them. 


I also stumbled upon the wonderful AskAboutIreland.ie which is very child-friendly. I set the children the task of researching the history of schools in the country using this site. They loved using it. It's bright, packed with information, activities, illustrations and pictures. 


Upon further delving into the site, I found some great resources for SESE and Gaeilge. I particularly like the eBooks of Irish myths and legends. There's an audio option for differentiation too. One reservation I have about the site is that the standard of Gaeilge is quite high and that it may be more suited to scoileanna T1 and only senior classes in scoileanna T2. 

FAO Irish Teachers: Sa Bhaile resources

This one's for Irish teachers. I made a resource pack that links with the theme "sa bhaile" for senior classes. It contains two sets of fearas for making class books, "Ár dTithe Idéalacha" and "Tithe Samhraidh." Both have differentiated sheets (two levels) and a cover sheet. There's also a tasc éisteachta and a rólimirt.

Rainn agus amhráin

FAO Irish teachers, ever have trouble finding a rann or amhrán to fit your theme and age-level? Well look no further than this site. It has poems filed according to class level and theme, complete with pretty fonts and clipart. This is an excellent resource, well worth checking out!

FAO Irish Teachers: An t-Am Luaschártaí

This is one for my Irish followers. Just a simple thing that you can put in any classroom as "prionta sa timpeallacht." Simply print out these flashcards on coloured (that's why they're not in order) or white paper, cut, laminate, trim and stick up around your clock.
