Halloween Decorations and Worry Monsters

Hi all,

Last week I posted about some mindfulness techniques. One that the children really enjoyed was making "worry monsters." I cut out a mouth shape from some inside-out cereal boxes, left out lots of materials and let the children at it! Then they wrote down their worries and "fed" them to the monsters. I'll give some time over the coming weeks for the children to write more worries if they wish.

I unintentionally timed it very well because they look like they're part of the Hallowe'en decor! Delighted!

Bring on the spooky season!

Halloween Costume Reveal

As promised, here are a couple of pics of the Hallowe'en costume that I wore to work today. This wedding dress (a charity shop buy that cost less than a tenner) has served me well with this being it's fourth outing. I made the bouquet of flowers from black tissue paper and twigs.

I'd love to share some pictures of the children but unfortunately I can't! They had some wonderful costumes and make up and really got into the spirit of it.

We're very fortunate to have extremely creative school directors who created a house of horrors that I can't find enough words to describe. The children entered through a pitch black tunnel maze. The only way to find your way through is by feeling the corners. Along the tunnel, there are cobwebs, fake rats and bubble  wrap to create spooky sensations. As you exit, two more "surprises" roared and jumped towards you. Amazing!

Simple but striking door decoration idea

Hi all,

I hope you're all in the Hallowe'en mood. It's definitely my favourite celebration of the school year!

I wanted to share this great door display that my colleague made. All you need is a sheet of black paper, a sheet of yellow paper, a roll of toilet paper, scissors and tape et voilà!

It's really quite striking and the children loved it today. Sometimes the simple ideas are the best!

Here's a quick collage of what's been going on in my room. Be sure to stop by my blog tomorrow to check out my Halloween costume. I've been busy working on parts of it when the children were outside at playtime.

Hallowe'en Magic Square Freebie

Thank you to Heather Whetham from "HoJo's Teaching Adventures" for introducing me to the concept of magic squares. I had never used these for teaching before and she has shown how versatile they can be in teaching vocabulary or maths facts. Her Hallowe'en themed magic squares are a great way of revising Hallowe'en vocabulary. You can download them for free from here TPT store.

Heather also has some fantastic maths magic squares up for grabs on her TPT store. I tried a sample one out with a child in my class and he really enjoyed it. It's a useful early finisher task and it's designed so that it's very easy to spot the correct solution.

Picasso style monsters - including free PowerPoint tutorial

Thanks to Mr. Denis Moynihan of Greenlanes N.S. for sharing his class' artwork. They created these Picasso style monsters following a tutorial by the wonderful Mrs. Picasso (of Mrs. Picasso's Art Room). Some of them have put me ill at ease about going to bed tonight!

They're not too difficult to make. I think children of all ages would really like make these and there's tonnes of room for creativity.

Mr. Moynihan has been extremely generous and has offered to share his a PowerPoint he made to accompany this lesson. You can download it from here.

Hallowe'en Carols

I heard about these fantastic carols today. They're a bunch of Christmas carols re-worded to fit the Hallowe'en theme. The children in my class (9-11 year olds) really enjoyed these. They found them hilarious. Click here to view the full lot.

This was the favourite:

Deck the halls with poison ivy,

fa la la la la, la la la la.

'Tis the season to be slimy,

fa la la la la, la la la la.

Don we now our strange apparel,

fa la la, la la la, la la la.

Troll the ancient Halloween carol,

fa la la la la, la la la la.

See the goblins rise before us,

fa la la la la, la la la la.

As we sing the Halloween chorus,

fa la la la la, la la la la.

Follow them as they ascend,

fa la la, la la la, la la la.

Join with all your loony friends,

fa la la la la, la la la la.
